Life in Denmark

Danes are often described as “the happiest people in the world”. This satisfaction among the inhabitants of Denmark with life is often credited to factors such as; culture, leisure time and family life.

Located in the southern part of Scandinavia, Denmark is known as the gateway between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Denmark is a coastal country with long white beaches, generally flat landscape, green fields and forests. Because of the flat landscape, the bicycle is for many Danes the preferred means of urban transportation, and the easy access to lakes, sea and forests means that outdoor-activities ranks high on the weekend agenda.

The Danish lifestyle

Danes are generally well educated, well informed, yet at the same time enjoy a distinctly Danish informality. This gives Danes a relaxed and often humorous attitude to authorities and life itself. Most Danes also have a good command of English, so you will find it easy to live and communicate in Denmark even if you do not speak Danish - although Danes will appreciate if you have made the effort of learning the language. Denmark is a very safe and secure country with a low crime rate, and corruption is practically non-existent.

The Danish welfare system

The Danish welfare system and in extension the high taxation rates is founded in the emphasis placed on maintaining a good work-life balance, the values of democracy and equal opportunities. The high level of social welfare contributes to a society that is accustomed to generally high standards of living with free education, health care, access to libraries, museums etc.
